Legends of Golf at Independence Club

October 5, 2009 - Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, Virginia.

The Virginia State Golf Association hosted the Legends of Virginia Golf to raise money and awareness for the VSGA Foundation. I was lucky to have an "inside the ropes" view of the true greats of Virginia golf - Vinny Giles, Bobby Wadkins, Curtis Strange and Lanny Wadkins. It was hard to believe that, at 50 (gulp!) I was the youngster in the crowd. Though I failed to win a skin, I actually hit the ball better than I thought I might and my putting let me down. Ironically, my putting has remained fairly strong in recent years.

The event was great fun for me - I had not played with Lanny or Curtis in probably 6 or 8 years, and I had not played with Bobby in about 3 years. Vinny (the reigning US Senior Amateur Champion) and I played in the Senior State Open of Virginia in September. I think that Vinny probably played the best of anyone at Independence, but the greens provided a difficult challenge for all of us. While we had all played a lot of rounds together over the years, this was the only time (and will likely BE the only time) that we have played in a fivesome.
